"Sensitive skin" isn't one condition — it's a barrier that reacts faster than average to a fairly short, specific list of common triggers. Knowing what those are is more useful than avoiding entire product categories.
- Fragrance (including "natural" fragrance) — the single most common trigger for reactive skin, and one of the easiest to simply check a label for.
- Denatured alcohol — used for a fast-drying, "clean" feel in toners, but it strips the barrier it's supposed to be prepping.
- High-percentage physical exfoliants — coarse scrubs create micro-tears in already-compromised skin.
- Essential oils — citrus and mint oils in particular are common irritants even in small amounts.
- Sulfates in cleansers — effective at cutting oil, but often too aggressive for a thin or reactive barrier.
The fix isn't fewer products — it's reading labels for these five before anything else, and reaching for barrier-supporting ingredients like centella instead of stripping ones. If a product doesn't list a fragrance-free claim on the front, check the ingredient list for "parfum" before assuming.
