How to Build the Perfect Skincare Routine

Five-step Centella skincare travel set staged for a daily routine

A routine isn't the number of products on your shelf — it's the order they go on and whether each one is doing a job the others aren't already covering. Most routines fail not because they're missing a product, but because they're missing a structure.

The order, step by step

  1. Cleanser — removes the day's buildup so everything after this actually absorbs instead of sitting on top of oil and residue.
  2. Toner — rebalances skin after cleansing and preps it to take in the next steps.
  3. Ampoule or serum — your most concentrated, targeted step. This is where centella, brightening, or hydration formulas go.
  4. Eye cream — thinner skin, different needs, applied before your moisturiser gets in the way.
  5. Moisturiser — seals everything underneath it and finishes the barrier.
  6. SPF (morning only) — non-negotiable, and the last step before makeup.

Morning vs evening — what actually changes

Morning routines are about protection: something calming, moisture, and SPF. Evening is when you can afford actives that need to be washed off the sun's radar — the routine has all night to work, and there's no photosensitivity to plan around.

Where people overcomplicate it

The most common mistake isn't skipping a step — it's stacking three serums that all claim to do the same thing. If your ampoule already targets hydration and barrier repair, you don't need a second hydrating serum layered on top. Pick one active focus per routine slot and let it work.

Start with a cleanser, a centella ampoule, and a moisturiser. Add SPF in the morning. That four-step routine, done consistently, will outperform a nine-step routine done inconsistently every time.
