The rule for layering skincare is simpler than most routines make it look: thinnest consistency to thickest. Watery formulas go on first and absorb into skin; heavier, oil-based formulas go last and seal everything underneath.
The general order
- Cleanser
- Toner (watery, prepping)
- Essence or ampoule (concentrated, still thin)
- Serum (targeted treatment)
- Eye cream
- Moisturiser or cream (thickest, sealing)
- Facial oil, if used (thickest of all)
- SPF, always last, in the morning
Why the order actually matters
Apply a heavy cream before a water-based serum and the serum simply can't penetrate — it sits on top of the oil barrier the cream just created and does nothing. This is the most common reason people feel like an expensive serum "isn't working": it was never given the chance to reach the skin.
A simple test if you're unsure where something goes: if two products don't have a clear consistency difference, the one that treats a more specific concern goes first, closer to clean skin.
