Skin is in a different mode depending on the time of day. During the day it's mainly defending — against UV, pollution, and general environmental stress. At night, with none of that to fight off, it shifts into repair. A routine that ignores this split is asking one set of products to do two very different jobs.
Morning: protect first
Keep the morning simple and protective — a gentle cleanse (or just water, if your skin isn't oily overnight), a calming ampoule, moisturiser, and SPF. This is not the time for strong actives like retinol; the goal is to send skin into the day defended, not mid-treatment.
Night: repair without interruption
Evenings are when heavier actives make sense, because there's no sun exposure to complicate them and skin has hours of uninterrupted time to actually use what you've applied. Richer creams, targeted treatments, and anything with retinoids or exfoliating acids belong here, not in the morning.
If you only have the energy for one thoughtful step a day, make it different depending on when it is — protection in the morning, repair at night. That single distinction does more for skin than most nine-step routines.
